Our colleagues Catarina Silva and João Pereira from Ciencias participated in the Iberian Plant Biology (IPB2025) in Murcia, Spain. It is an international congress hosted by the Portuguese and Spanish Societies of Plant Biology (SPBP and SEBP, respectively) which aims to congregate plant scientists of diverse fields of research – from plant development to stress biology.
Our colleagues presented their S4G-related work, jointly developed with CREA, at two different sessions: the “Abiotic stresses” and the “Biotic interactions” respectively.
The two abstracts tackle grapevine downy mildew from very different angles:
Both use spray-induced gene silencing, but one silences a plant gene to study immune regulation, the other silences a pathogen gene to curb infection.
Together, these complementary approaches expand SHIELD4GRAPE’s toolkit from understanding grapevine immunity at the epigenetic level to pinpointing pathogen effectors that can be targeted for sustainable control.
