From 25 to 28 June 2025 at the Plant Biology Europe conference, our colleague Amedeo Moine from CNR, presented the work entitled “Exploiting Somaclonal Variability to Increase Drought Stress Tolerance in Grapevine”.
He described how Nebbiolo somaclones generated via somatic embryogenesis were screened under controlled water-stress conditions, acclimated in the greenhouse, and evaluated through a combination of physiological, anatomical and biochemical assays.
Ongoing efforts include field trials at the Bonafous Centre in Chieri, whole-genome sequencing of promising lines, and micro-grafting onto commercial rootstocks in Barbaresco.
This approach promises a fast, cost-effective route to climate-smart grape varieties—crucial for sustaining viticulture under changing conditions.
