The conference “New Genomic Techniques (NGT): Unlocking the Future of the Wine Industry”, organized as part of the Shield4Grape project by BSB – Burgundy School of Business and the GIP BOURGOGNE JURA VIGNE ET VIN, took place on the 12th February at the OIV – Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin in Dijon.

Still an emerging topic within the wine sector, new breeding technologies are generating both strong interest and important questions, highlighting the need for further clarification. The objective of this conference was to dedicate time to analysis and knowledge-sharing around these technologies, which are expected to play a growing role in industry debates in the coming years. The event provided scientific, economic, and regulatory insights into the key issues associated with these innovations.

On the agenda:

• An overview of what NGTs are, the techniques involved, the biotechnological approaches they rely on, and their applications for developing new plant material in viticulture – Irene Perrone & Chiara Pagliarani (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche)

• Presentation of a first survey assessing the level of acceptance and adoption among winegrowers in the Italian Veneto region and analysis aimed at evaluating the economic and environmental impact of edited vine adoption by Venetian producers – Federica D. & Federica Morandi (CREA Ricerca)

• Discussion of regulatory and coordination challenges among producing countries, in a context marked by heterogeneous international positions and intense debates at the European level, ranging from restrictive regulatory approaches to more liberal visions – Enrico Battiston (OIV – Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin)
