On March 1st, 2025, the sixth edition of the annual conference organized by the Lions Club Nizza-Canelli took place at the Foro Boario in Nizza Monferrato, Italy. As part of the “Lions for Clean and Sustainable Agriculture” initiative, this year’s event focused on the theme:
“Learning from Crises to Design the Future of Viticulture.”

The conference provided an important platform for discussion on the major grapevine pathologies affecting the Piedmontese viticultural economy, with leading experts in the field sharing their insights and research.

Notably, two partners from the S4G consortium contributed as key speakers:

  • Giorgio Gambino (Institute for the Protection and Sustainability of Plants, CNR – IPSP Turin)
    – “Genetic Improvement of the Vine: From GMOs to TEA” – A deep dive into the latest advancements in grapevine genetic improvement technologies.
  • Francesco Favaretto (Council for Research in Viticulture and Agricultural Economic Analysis, CREA-VE Conegliano)
    – “Present and Future of the Fight Against Esca Disease: Available Technical Means and Research Prospects” – Exploring current strategies and future solutions for managing one of the most damaging wood diseases in vineyards.

Discussions during the conference addressed the spread of phytoplasmas and grapevine wood diseases, as well as the opportunities presented by emerging genetic improvement technologies. The event highlighted the importance of research and innovation in ensuring a resilient and sustainable future for viticulture.
